Silos

D'Aprix provides insight into the silo mentality and how it can challenge effective communication within an organization.

Sir Richard Branson demonstrates how breaking down this silo mentality can bring together the most unlikely people and produce the most amazing results. In this editorial he mentions the challenge facing the public and private sectors being on opposing sides but wanting the same outcome:  A partnership for health

As Chairman of the Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson has formed a "partnership for health". I had the pleasure of attending his speaking engagement at a recent conference where I was an exhibitor. Sir Richard spoke with great passion and pride of Virgin Unite, the "elders" and others who are empowered to make decisions and work together to run this non-profit. This is a really great example of what can be accomplished when silos are replaced with an understanding by each member of the team as to how to align their efforts with the corporate vision as well as missions and objectives of other teams. 1. Hi Page, Nice example of Silos. I am sure we all observe similar situation in our workplace. My observation about Silos being developed is that if employees/departments try to show their importance in the company. If they start sharing information then seemingly they loose their hold. I have an example where one of the area supervisor never share any key incidients with the manager of his area. Instead he disclose information in the meeting in front of department head which effectively shows that manager does not know about the incident.

I think it is also a game where employees try to impress seniors by just having all the info to themselves. But I can see that department head should not let such situation creep into his team where he/she can practice theories as you mentioned about Sir Richard Branson in your post.

  3. Great example of what organizations should aspire to both internally and with appropriate allies externally. The "Lone Ranger" approach seems born into many of us in the West.
